~"Lion Country Safari" Part 1~

We just had the most enjoyable few days.  We went to the Lion Country Safari  near West Palm Beach. Lion Country Safari is a drive through safari with over 900 animals. It was founded in 1967 by four South African families and claims to be a the first "cageless" zoo in the US.  We spent an hour the first evening, driving through the park and seeing all the animals.  We were given a cd to listen to as we drove through the park which had interesting facts about the animals.  Most of them come from Africa, but there are some from other areas of the world.   I felt like I was back in my "native land" - SO cool!

These are Rhea from South America.
The South America Tapir from Brazil.
 Waterbuck ??
Ostrich - world's largest bird.
This one was SO close he was pecking on the window - hilarious!!!  Strict rules in the park - NO windows down at all!
They had lots of beautiful impala from South Africa.
 Wildebeest.
Gemsbok - these animals can go long periods of time with little or not water.
This is a Greater Kudu - second largest type of Antelope.
Blackbuck from India.  One of the smallest members of the antelope family.
And then we arrived at the Lions!  WOW - they were fighting, roaring and we had such a great view of them!   The ranger was in a truck and was trying to "control" them.
Doesn't he look so "sweet" just sitting there!  Hey.....Kitty.....Kitty !!!   He didn't look like that a minute ago!!!
Water Buffalo - they can weigh up to 1.5 tons!!
 Who is the strongest??
 Another lovely kudu.
This is the Aldabra Tortoise from near Madagascar.  They can weigh over 500 lbs and can live well past 100 years.

Kulan - they can run very fast - up to 72 kmph.  They are an endangered species.
 Nile Lechwe.

The zebras were so pretty!
Baby one.  Look at the colouring.
Rhinos
The monkeys had a very large "play area".

This White-Handed Gibbon from Southeast Asia was having a relaxing time.
We had a fantastic view of the giraffes.  They are so beautiful!

More to come.......we just saw this the first time we went in!
