~Key West~

The other day we decided to drive to Key West.   Key West is an island in the Straits of Florida and is at the southernmost tip of the Florida Keys.

We just "had" to take a photo on the GPS which shows the narrow road and water all around us - actually quite a scary thought!
Then......we arrived!!  As far away from home as we could get.
We found a free parking (thanks to a blog friend of Stephanie's), had a picnic lunch and then walked for hours all around the city!
This is famous Duval Street.  We just took a quick glance as we drove by.
Next we walked to Mallory Square with its cobbled streets, cafe's, "touristy" attractions, shopping  etc....
They have these little trains that a lot of tourists use to see the city.

This is the historic seaport.  There were several cruise ships in the port.
All over the city are roosters - they were everywhere - in people's yards, in the streets, on the grass etc...

Highway 1 starts in Maine at the Canadian border and travels down the east coast of the USA.  This stretch is 3825 kms long and ends here in Key West.
This was the home of famous author Ernest Hemingway and is located in the heart of Old Town Key West.  Ernest Hemingway lived and wrote here for more than 10 years. There are still more than 40 cats that live there!!
Many of the houses are painted in different colours - very neat!

And here we are..............the southern most point !! YAY!
And....we got to see an iguana - actually two - a mom and her baby!  Thankfully, both were behind a fence!!!
There are SO many beautiful flowers down here in Florida.
On our way back home we stopped at the "Bat House".  This was erected in 1929 by Mr Perky as a chemical-free plan to get rid of mosquitoes.  Unfortunately he died before he could carry out his strategy, but the house still stands!    Creepy!
