~Grohmann Knives, Pictou, Nova Scotia~

Today we enjoyed the pretty town of Pictou.  The "Hector" is a full size replica of the original ship which brought Scottish emigrants from Scotland to Nova Scotia in 1773.  It is located downtown on the wharf.
We have seen numerous lighthouses dotted all around New Brunswick and Nova Scotia - so pretty!
Since it was pouring rain today we decided to do a factory tour of Grohmann Knives.  It was so interesting.  "Grohmann Knives Ltd" was formed in 1961 by the family and in 1969 was run by one of Grohmann's daughters, Berta and her husband.  They then passed it down to their sons and today it is run by one of the son's and his daughter.   The knives are top quality and are produced with as many as 53 steps between starting point and finished product.   The tour went through the factory where we were able to watch tradesmen working on the knives - we learned so much.
Rudolph Grohmann in 1912 created this knife at the completion of his apprenticeship as a master knifemaker.  He was 17 years old.  He worked 12 hrs a day for 3 months to produce the pocket knife.  The knife is made from high carbon stainless steel and has 108 parts.  Each individual part was completely hand filed and it takes half and hour to fully open!!!  Incredible!!
They had a lovely shop with many knives for sale.
